Vaccines – Forced Vaccinations to Attend School

May 3, 2012 in Califonria, Health, Vaccines

Want your kids to go to public school in California?  In 2012-2013 school year, an amendment to California’s Health and Safety Code, related to vaccines will require a Tdap booster for whooping cough (pertussis), for 7th, 8th and 12th graders before being allowed into school.   It is one thing to require vaccination for public health, yet quite another when evidence points to the conclusion that the whooping cough vaccine is ineffective and questionable.

Even more concerning about the forced vaccination may be the efficacy of the vaccines for pertussis as a result of research after the 2010 whooping cough outbreak in California.  The 2010 outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) saw over 9,100 people became ill and 10 infants died. Lead researcher Dr. David Witt, chief of infectious disease at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, California, said “I was disturbed to find maybe we had a little more confidence in the vaccine than it might deserve,.”

At the American Society for Microbiology conference in Chicago, Witt said,  “What we identified pretty quickly was that the bulk of the outbreak was in vaccinated, fully vaccinated up-to-date children.” (Author’s emphasis).  It was discovered by researchers in Marin County (California),  that the whooping cough vaccine becomes largely ineffective three years after being administered.

Current federal guidelines call for the whooping cough vaccine to be administered in five doses, the first shot given at 2 months of age, the final shot between 2 and 4 years of age, with a booster to be receive at 11 or 12 years of age.

While many California parents will simply acquiesce and follow the new law, but they need not submit to the requirements for the whooping cough vaccine, and other vaccines.  Thought they will most likely have to request it, vaccines can be refused for personal or medical reasons.  Request Personal Belief Exemption Form (PBEF).  Learn more about this and other California vaccine laws.

Parents and kids have a right to know about the effects and requirements, share this information with others and allow them to be informed.

EEOC Updates Policy on Criminal Background Checks

May 2, 2012 in Responsibility and Ethics, Uncategorized

Without doubt, it is good news to hear that the EEOC recently updated their policy on criminal background checks, but in another aspect it is sad that it was necessary.  Without doubt, the soaring unemployment rates, upwards of greater than 50% for previously incarcerated persons, the pre-employment process does need to be addressed.  On the other hand that a government agency has to ‘tell us’ how to behave is deplorable!  While a positive and needed step, the increase in costs for violations of the new policy, will undoubtedly create more ‘criminals’ and further impede the legal justice system.

We are all responsible for human rights and should not  need such government agencies as the EEOC, to tell us how to act and behave.  Like children on the playground though, we need such things as the EEOC to ‘keep us in line’ and do the ‘right thing.’  The EEOC, in its guidance, indicates that ‘blanket’ statements regarding those with criminal records have a negative racial impact and thus are in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In the time of an uncertain economy and a scarcity of jobs,  over 65 million adults in the U.S., carry the label of being arrested or convicted.  Research by one researcher discovered job seekers with a criminal record are 50% less likely to receive a callback from an employer.  Even though the use of criminal background checks has risen in the last century, as more and more information has become available, the information is sometimes decades old, minor or errant.  Errant information was previously the cause of this author losing a contract due to errant information.  Despite efforts to have the information corrected, it was only through one reporting agency and too late to save the contract.

Though policies by employers to ban applicants with criminal records, such policies do exist as was documented in an agreement from Pepsi to pay $3.13 million for a policy denying employment to anyone with an arrest record, even if conviction never occurred, or it was for a minor offense.  By allowing and condoning such actions and policies, we are are adding to and furthering the problem by excluding and denying the right (the need) to work and survive to potentially countless others.

With the high rate of arrests and incarceration with African-Americans and Latinos, as well as such decisions to convict innocent people, an estimated 10,000 a year, by the SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States).  What is more important?  Image or civil rights?  Virtually every employer utilizes a criminal background checks these days, is it for protection or image? Good luck on you next employment search.

Marijuana – The Most Misunderstood Plant

April 30, 2012 in Alernative Energy, Biofuels, Mother (Nature)

Probably the first thing you think of at the mention of hemp is marijuana.  (Origin of the word marijuana is unknown, both time and place of the origin.  Suspected to be of Spanish descent from the names, Maria and Juana, to form the slang term Mary Jane.)  Both the male and female, varieties of plant contain THC, the active ingredient in marijuana but commercial hemp contains low levels of THC and is essentially useless for getting ‘high.’

One thing that is apparent and sad, is that many people vying for the legalization of marijuana often intermix and confuse the properties and values of commercial hemp with the recreational drug marijuana.  The purpose of this article is to present the case for the legalization and benefits of commercial hemp. This article is not intended or aimed at the discussion of hemp as a recreational drug.

The History of Hemp

Hemp has a long history in the world, with the first documented use about 8000 years ago in the form of fabric as found used to make fabric.  It also has a long history in the United States, until the 1930’s hemp was a legal cash crop in the US.  Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were growers and even Benjamin Franklin started one of America’s first paper mills, using hemp!

In 1619, the first hemp law was enacted in the United States, at Jamestown Colony, Virginia,  the law ordered all farmers to grow hemp seed.  Farmers could face jail time for failing to abide by the law.  There were several other ‘required grow’ laws in the US over history.   Because of a hemp shortage between 1763 and 1776, you could be jailed in Virginia for failing to comply.  During this time, hemp was even considered ‘legal tender’ and it was even possible to pay taxes hemp.  (Can you imagine telling the tax man today, “Yeah I’ve got a pound of hemp you can have.”?

In 1950, the US Census, counted 8,327 hemp plantations, producing the critical crop.  (a plantation at the time was a minimum farm of 2000 acres.)  In 1942, the United States government had the “Hemp for Victory” program and even produced a film encouraging US farmers to grow hemp in support of the war effort.

Other recorded ‘requirements exist in government history, both of the US and others but are too lengthy to include in their entirety

The Illegalization of Hemp in the United States

Growing and cultivation of hemp (commercial) is legal in Canada and all states of the European Union.
The criminalization of hemp in this country is quite fascinating and nauseating too. Read up on the history in the US, beginning in the 1930’s and you will read such names as Du Pont (owner of the largest chemical company) and William Randolph Hearst (owner of the largest newspaper chain, along with other tabloids, magazines and film).  Did these two entities help destroy the US Hemp market?  Did Du Pont lobby the chief counsel of the Treasury Department, Herman Oliphant, to criminalize hemp cultivation in support of Du Pont’s petrochemical products?

Did William Randolph Heart’s newspapers also simultaneously begin campaigns to portray Mexicans as “lazy, degenerate, and violent,” and as marijuana smokers and job stealers.   Given the vast amount of resources at his disposal; newspapers, magazines, periodicals and film,  Hearst definitely had the means to ‘sway’ the opinions of the U.S.  Hearst used headlines such as “Marijuana goads user to blood lust” and “Hotel clerk identifies Marijuana smoker as gunman”. In headlines to sway opinion on hemp.  Motivation also seemed to be prevalent with him as well.   Further motivation was, through the massive holdings in lumber that he had.

Racism was a big motivator for Hearst, through his ‘hate’ for Mexicans, both thru there influx to the U.S.  And his losing approximately 800,000 acres of timberland to Pancho Villa.  His hatred showed in many of the articles published in his publications showing his hated for minorities.  Many of these articles were slated and used at ‘demonizing’ hemp to further his agenda to have it outlawed.

Lammont Du Pont also figures prominently with the criminalization of hemp in the U.S.  Lammont Du Pont and William Randolph Hearst were well acquainted, and quite possible friends.  Lammont Du Pont also had reason to see hemp outlawed as the crop had the potential of hindering his prosperity.  Around this time, Lammont Du Pont introduced Hearst to a method of developing paper from wood pulp, surprisingly developed by Du Pont.  Further Du Pont, had reason to want the commercial hemp market illegalized in the U.S., as his company developed many products that were directly threatened and in competition of the company’s products.  A ‘partnership’ with Hearst, both in the paper industry and getting Hemp illegalized worked well, for both  Lammont Du Pont.

Enter  Harry J. Anslinger, soon to become the Commissioner of the Treasury Bureau of Narcotics, who was the nephew-in-law of Andrew Mellon.  Mellon was at the time Lammont Du Pont’s banker, Mellon was also at this time, the Secretary of Treasury, under Herbert Hoover.  Henry Anslinger, is said to have gotten the Marijuana Tax Law of 1937 passed and he is also attributed with being the first Drug Czar of the United States!

Ansingler flatly declared, ‘they can continue to raise hemp just as they have always done it.  It makes fine cordage and this legislation exempts the mature stalk when in It is grown for hemp purposes.’  Read the statement given by him to before the and Means Committee. Alsinger, was purported to direct field agents to submit stories which were compiled into what is now known as the Gore Files, which Anslinger referred to often in his ‘fight’ against hemp.  Later studies have found the contents of the Gore File essentially had no bearing, on either the ‘drug war’ or the illegalization of hemp.

Anslinger was a racist too?  Yes, supposedly he was and often quoted articles from Hearst’s newspapers.  Here are some reported quotes made by him, racist and anti-’hemp.’

“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”
”Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”
“Marihuana influences Negroes to look at white people in the eye, step on white men’s shadows and look at a white woman twice.”…….Hearst newspaper 1935

While it is ‘legal’ to grow hemp in the U.S., it is an expensive and substantial.  The DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) put strict controls and requires strict security for facilities growing hemp.  A DEA permit is required before growing hemp, making research or production virtually cost prohibitive in the U.S. .

Currently, Canada and all European Union countries allow the growth and production of hemp.  In the U.S., hemp products must be imported or manufactured from imported hemp products.

Hemp as a Crop

In February, 1938, Popular Mechanics stated “New Million Dollar Crop” in an article, although the editors must have been unfamiliar with the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act that was passed in the U.S.  Mechnaics. The article makes several references to the potential benefits of hemp as a crop in the U.S.

Henry Ford, demonstrates (below) his ‘new’ car made from plastic derived from plants, shown.  He claims the plastic is tough enough to withstand 9,000 lbs of pressure without breaking.

EW56Bhttp://grannysnaturals.com/2010/10/09/the-most- misunderstood-plant-marijuana/soycar/WH6PDZ6EFP

Henry Ford, has also been touted as the icon of renewable energy.

The viability of biofuels and composites were proven viable by Henry Ford about the same time Du Pont and Hearst, were ‘working’ to have hemp outlawed in the United States.

Some claim that (commercial) hemp has between 25,000 and 50,000 uses, in many cases replacing many of the products of today.  Benefits of hemp for the use of products include, the removal of harmful chemicals and petrochemicals, less dependence on non-renewable sources, increased nutrition and easing of a burdened food supply, consequently reducing hunger and malnutrition.

The list goes on and on, but the many benefits of commercial hemp are outside the scope of this article.
Hemp is, renewable, recyclable, reusable and environmentally safe.

The benefits of hemp are numerous and include:

Paper:  Uses as natural process for manufacturing as opposed to wood pulp which requires petrochemicals.  Paper created from hemp is higher quality and more durable (does not tear as easily), does not yellow and is longer lasting.  Also, hemp paper can be recycled more times than paper created from wood pulp.  Converting paper mills to use hemp instead of wood pulp would require little conversion or cost.

Building Materials:  Hemp yields up to four times the average forest, producing three to eight tons of fiber per acre. Studies by Washington State University, found fiber board created from hemp to be stronger than than wood fiber.  Long growing forests can be saved by using fast growing, replenishable hemp.
Many of the building materials made from wood can be made from hemp, and be lighter and stronger.
Since hemp has a resistance to heat, the manufacture of insulation and insulating products have increased value in building materials as well as other markets.

Fuel:  Producing more bio-mass per acre than other crops.  Hydrocarbons from hemp can be used in place of other polluting, non-renewable fossil fuels.  Additionally, hemp can be manufactured into fuel pellets, liquid fuel, gas, and ethanol, further reducing our dependance on fossil fuels and nuclear power.

Petrochemicals:  Because hemp is rich in cellulose and can be used to create biodegradable plastics, reducing landfill waste, the ‘Plastic Island,’ and be more environmentally friendly.  Hemp can be processed into materials to be used for injection molding further reducing the dependance of fossil fuels and being safer for the envionment.

Paints and Varnishes: For thousands of years the finest paints and varnishes came from hemp produced products.  In 1935, the U.S. Used 58K tons of hemp for the production alone.

Most of the master artists of the world, Van Gogh, Gainsborough, Rembrandt etc, used hemp canvas (canvas is a derivative of cannabis) to create their masterpieces.

Food:   Estimates for hemp food products in the U.S. Between 20-33 million dollars.

Automotive Industry:  Almost all major automotive manufacturers are researching the value of hemp for use in the automotive industry.  As demonstrated above, plastics developed from hemp can be used in the manufacture of automobiles.  Also, the replacement of many of the petrochemicals used in various components of automotive manufacturing.

Personal Care:  Estimates for hemp personal care products is around 70-90 million dollars and growing.  Many manufacturers are creating and many retailers offering a wide range of products containing hemp.  The web is ‘packed’ with retailers offering a wide variety of personal health care products, from bath soap to laundry detergent.  All with benefits, both to the individual and the environment.

Textile Industry:  Many well known designers are beginning to use hemp fabric for their creations and many retail outlets are marketing the apparel. An international shoe manufacturer has designed a hemp shoe.  Carpet manufacturers are turning to hemp as the choice for fibers in creating ecological carpets based on its durability and strength.

Hemp offers more resistance to the sun than cotton.
The advantages of hemp over cotton are numerous, including strength, durability, also the growing properties of hemp over cotton.

Crop Growth and advantages

Improvement of soil fertility by converting nitrogen into organically bound nitrogen.  Hemp crops are not damaging to the bio-diversity of land.  Requiring no fertilizer or pesticides, hemp is economical and safe.  Crop rotation is not a requirement as with other crops, in some instances hemp has been raised fourteen years straight without damage to the soil.  With its long root system, hemp promotes land conservation by reducing erosion of the land.  The water requirements for hemp is low and not so demanding as other crops.
Production of cotton requires approximately 50% of the fertilizers and pesticides worldwide.  Cotton crops have a high demand for water, increasing its costs.  Less strong than hemp, cotton also has a fiber at one and one half to two inches versus up to fifteen feet with hemp.

Things you can do:

  • Educate yourself and others about the difference of commercial hemp and marijuana.
  • Spread the information to others
  • Support hemp products to increase the awareness, assist in reducing the cost, improve your life and your health through the use of hemp productis.
  • Lobby law makers to legalize the production and harvesting of commercial hemp.  Removing the stringent laws in place in the U.S. Further promoting a renewable, ecological and economical crop.

Free range chicken and bacon flavored ice cream

April 25, 2012 in Fast Food, Safe Food

Recently I learned the #3 burger chain ‘raises the bar’ – read about it and watch the video for more information.  This comes on the footsteps of the chain, along with other ‘fast food’ chains and grocery chains to decide to cease serving and selling ‘pink slime.’  A step in the right direction perhaps, but this most recent discussion will take until 2017 to implement ‘fully.’  So you potentially have five more years of eating ‘questionable’ products.

While making these ‘healthy’ decisions and announcements, yet seeming in the ‘same breathe,’ introduced the Bacon Sundae.  Blended vanilla ice cream and bacon?  If so, we could be looking forward to free range bacon right?  Not so lucky, the ‘bacon’ is flavored syrup – therein lies the potential health hazard.  The bacon syrup potentially containing Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate, both of which have their own potential heal hazards.

While the efforts and actions by fast food chains and food retailers appear to be a step in the right direction, it seems in some ways it is just ‘double speak,’  to quell the masses and apply grease to the ‘squeaky wheel..’  We must ‘keep the pressure’ on markets, such as fast food chains and food retailers to let them know, ‘telling us what we want to hear,’ is not enough to appease us and answer to the issues we have about health concerns is not enough.

Domestic Violence – A cause for concern

April 24, 2012 in Domestic Violence, Family

Now the VAWA (Violence Against Women Act – (Title IV, sec. 40001-40703 of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, H.R. 3355) signed as Pub.L. 103-322 by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994.)  It sounds like a good and needed law doesn’t it, after all, domestic violence is a major concern to many.   In some ways, undoubtedly it is desirable, but when you look closer, you might be a little surprised by it all.  Domestic abuse is a major concern and it is an issue undoubtedly something need be done about it, maybe though the VAWA.  Without doubt, domestic violence is a serious problem, but perhaps domestic violence isn’t exactly as we may think.

Angela Moore Parmley, PhD of the U.S. Department of Justice has acknowledged that “We have no evidence to date that VAWA has led to a decrease in the overall levels of violence against women.

Laws are funny things, it seems like ‘we’ are often going to the extreme to ‘protect’ ourselves and in the long run, do more harm than good!  The ‘Tough on Crime’ stance seems to in some ways be doing us more harm than good as the prison population increases, often times for reasons in which the law was not intended.  Megan’s law one prime example ~ for sure when it ‘came about’ the intent was not to cause ‘harm’ to the countless it has since passed.  Just consider what that law has meant for many teenagers having sex, ‘grannys’ taking off their tops and bras in protest ~ very possibly ‘marked’ for the rest of their lives as ‘sex offenders.’  Sadly, that is the first and only thing most people look at when looking as someone, not the circumstance causing it.

Along with the good it may do, consider also the harm it causes in many ways.  It could be said it discriminates in some ways when you view the actual facts about Domestic Violence almost undoubtedly your eyebrows will raise.  Even though the law is written for violence against women, consider that even though the law is written with the woman as the victim in mind, Domestic Violence is almost equally divided between women and men, as shown in multiple studies.  Only slightly more women are injured in domestic violence cases, but violence against men as a result of domestic violence is more than 40%.  Further question arises to the legitimacy of the ‘evil male’ offender when you take into consideration the rate of domestic violence is higher in bisexual, gay and lesbian relationships than heterosexual ones.  Battered spouses are not just battered wives.  Domestic violence does not effect just husbands and wives, but intimate partners as well.

No longer is it required for physical evidence or is cross examination necessary or permitted, which would permit to judges to distinguish between false and true allegations.  Without physical evidence a woman can appear before a judge, and request a temporary restraining order based on ‘expanded’ definitions for domestic violence in the current VAWA law.  “Economic DV” (where the man did not fulfill the woman’s economic wants),  vague senses of discomfort, fears are some of the ‘expanded’ definitions in the VAWA law.

Domestic abuse is a tragedy, in any shape or form, but the so is tearing apart families and destroying lives.  VAWA maybe a step in the right direction but the way it stands at this time, it has the propensity to create more victims and destroy families.  VAWA reauthorization analysis.  Make your decision but let your decision be based on fact, not emotions.  The Reauthorization for VAWA is soon, let your representative know you thoughts and position.

Biotechnology – The Right to Know – Food Labeling

April 23, 2012 in GMO, Safe Food

A number of biotechnology companies  don’t want us to know the if our food originates from genetically engineered sources are apparently prepared to fight to keep the information from us.  Just look to the current battle in Vermont.  Approximately 90% of constituents in that state have voiced their opinion and lobbied for the passing of H.722, which would require labeling of for mandatory labeling of all genetically manufactured food sold in that state.  Monsanto has threatened to sue the state if the bill passes.

In common government fashion, despite public, political and scientific testimony, the state government said they needed more.  The governor of Vermont, Peter Shumlin, seems ready to ‘cave’ to Monsanto’s threats of a legal battle, seeking to sue the state if H.722 passes.  Despite scientific evidence, overwhelming public support, and support of the majority of Vermont’s progressive legislators.  Despite his ability to extend the state legislative session and ‘force’ a vote on the issue, which has only about two weeks to do, it seems he has ‘rolled over,’ on his previous verbal support of the bill and will let it ‘die’ when the legislative session ends.  While California, has similar legislation calling for the labeling gm foods, there is no apparent threat from Monsanto to that state.

Even more concerning over the Vermont Governor’s apparent position on this issue, it comes despite supporters of the bill for a defense fund to combat Monsanto and not back down.

The choice and right to consume GMO food products is a personal choice undoubtedly.  However, the labeling of GMO products is but part of the concern and what should be considered.  Cross contamination is one consideration which causes the potential for contamination of non-gmo sources.  The ability to trace the cause of food allergies to the source is of concern as well.  GMO crops have infiltrated 80% of all the packaged food in the United States, yet you have not been told, and are not given the choice to choice otherwise.  The threat to family farms by the ‘strong arm’ tactics of biotechnology companies to dominate the food market.  Genetically modified foods threaten our health, our economy and our freedom.

Numerous countries all ready have a ban, partial ban of biotechnology  imports or cultivation, or a requirement of labeling of biotechnology products.  GM potatoes, gm salmon, gm soybeans, gm corn are just a few among a growing list of genetically modified food products.  You need not consume these food products directly though, many of them are used in the composition of other food products.  Consider also the affect and contamination of of food products using gm feed and the affect it has on us through livestock.

Thanks to organizations such a the Bill and Melinda Foundation and DuPont and their efforts, the spread of ge crops is spreading.  Consider the efforts made in South Africa, where GMO Sorghum was legally introduced to the country for ‘trial’ after the government there gave their blessing citing the merit of ‘adding nutrients into the crop.

Despite an apparent battle by the government to allow  there are a continually growing opposition to it. Consider the ruling by a federal judge in Missouri, stating the U.S. Fish and Wildlife should not have allowed gmo crops on a national wildlife refuge.  The ruling led to the cancellation of 37 contracts for gm corn and gm soybeans.

Companies have to enforce gm free food, gmo-containing foods from the product lines to ensure the safety and growing demands of consumers.  The government must be forced to ensure the safety of the people from contamination and exposure to gmo-containing food, and not side with biotechnology companies who seek only their bottom line and not to eliminate the gmo presence.

Communities need to band together together to form gmo-free zones and rally together to educate and inform the public of gmo issues and concerns.

Maybe Just as Important, or More than Prayer

April 22, 2012 in Personal, Thanks

Just as important is prayer, is the opposite – THANKS.

It is easy for some to sometimes give up on prayer, thinking their prayers are not being answered.  When in reality maybe we are praying for the ‘wrong’ thing instead instead of praying for the ‘big picture’ and the Creator’s will.   Instead, we selfishly pray for our own will and desires to be down.  Before we pray our own will, we must ensure it is God’s will, aligned with the balance of the big picture.

Often times we neglect to give the time to thanks that we should, foolishly or careless asking for what we or think we want or need.  If we fail to give thanks for that which we all ready have and received, why should we expect or deserve more?  If you give me a piece of candy with your love and I do not say thanks, why would you want to give me a piece of candy again?  Creator has given us so much all ready and we often times continue to ask for more, without giving anything back – even our Thanks.

It is said, everything happens for a reason, even the bad, but within the bad there can be good it is not just easily recognizable immediately, by ourselves or others.  Sometimes we have to ‘look’ seriously and deeply to find the good, even in the bad.

It is now that I write this, not to boast or brag, but to share my thanks with you and the Creator, the many blessings I have known and the eternal thanks I feel for it.  So many people so only the ‘bad’ of things when truly there is good in it.  For this, I give thanks to God for all these things and more.

The tearing away of my mother at a young age.  If God had not seen the need and the reason, I would not be the man I am today.

The abusive step-mother who through her own pains and for her own reasons taught  me the feel of physical and mental abuse.  Though her blows and words could have left permanent scars, Creator saw fit to allow this abuse to make me a stronger man, to know that known one should ever know the pain and torment I did.  For this I am thankful for the experience and lessons it provided to me to do all I can to ensure no living thing ever has to know such things.

The love, protection and care God gave to me when my life was filled with drugs and alcohol and the love and grace given to me, that protected me from great harm, but at the same time gave me the knowledge and wisdom of how and what these things can bring to one.

For the lessons of control, self importance, arrogant, proud and egotistical.  Never letting it ‘go so far’ as to be abusive or hurtful to others.  Yet to feel and know why such things are so damaging and that there is greater joy and good in life to not be selfish, not being egotistical or proud in the wrong ways.

To the Creator, I am thankful for all the people, put into my life to teach me the value of respect and self respect. That taught me to ‘do unto others as I would have them do  unto me.’

For granting me life, not once but at least three times so that I can know the value, the beauty and the significance of others in my life.  So that I can live my life giving to others in all ways that I can to ensure they can know all the blessings in this life.  That I can know the pleasures and blessings of getting in this life all the pleasures and blessings I know from giving more than for what I ask.  For the realization that it is not the things the world can give me which bring me the greatest joys and happiness, but instead of the things I can give to the world to know happiness and joy.

For the life granted to me, to enjoy the numerous things that I took for granted for so long and as many of us do.  The chance to feel the sun, the rain, the wind against my skin.  To know the joy and pleasure of kind words, hugs and gestures from my friends.  All of the things Creator has provided in this life to show and share the beauty of life.

The portion of my life provided as fully sighted so that I could come to experience, grow and appreciate all the things of beauty provided.  Also though to see much of the ugliness humankind introduces to destroy the beauty provided so that I can speak out, teach and share the natural beauty that is the gift of the Creator to us all.

For affecting my eyesight, so that I might not see so fully with my eyes, but more so to see and feel with my heart.  For all my friends so that I may share with them all the beauties and blessings of my life so that they can know more fully the ‘true’ meaning of life.’  For allowing me to know the importance of the gifts I have received and not seeing them as adverse or negative as many people do.  For the chance, the opportunity and the blessing to know and feel more alive than I ever did in the years prior.  For all the unanswered prayers, the things I prayed for and sought that we of my own will and not for the greater good, nor the big picture.

Is it wrong to eat Pink Slime?

April 20, 2012 in Pink Slime, Safe Food

In response to inquires I have received about me making judgement on the right to consume Pink Slime – like anything else, it is a personal choice of what is right for you.  Just like getting a tattoo, drinking a glass of wine, smoking a cigarette or committing suicide – they are all personal choices and should not be influenced or determined by another.

Perhaps I have been remiss in speaking out about Pink Slime as I have and not making this more clear in regards to the personal choice.  The issue I have and the reason I speak out is the choice by a ‘few’ to ‘force’ the consumption of Pink Slime on them, and not allow them their personal choice.  Just as saying it is ‘wrong’ to eat Pink Slime, how ‘right’ is it for producers, manufactures and others to decide it is right for everyone to eat Pink Slime, and not have a choice about it?

To questions asked, yes, Pink Slime is an ‘official and widely used term, it is not one I made up myself.  Pink slime which is marketed as beef, is actually not beef but a beef product.  So firstly, many of us are led to believe we are buying beef when actually it is a beef product.  It is not so much that animal products that the supposed beef is made from as it the process it goes through to end up with the final product.  Perhaps a more technical term for Pink Slime, although likely one just as few people are familiar is ammoniated beef. A deeply concerning practice [IMHO] dreamed up by BPI (Beef Products Inc).  The process and practice which saw their sales drop by 25% as a response by the general public response to the questionable practice.

If there is a ‘right or wrong’ to the Pink Slime issue it is not whether it is right or wrong to consume it, but the ‘deceitful’ practice and forcible requirement to consume it, through deceptive and lack of information, as well as healthy alternatives.  The consumption of Pink Slime, is indeed a personal choice, that should be left to the individual.  However, to arrive at the most informed and best decision, the individual should be presented with the true and correct facts and not forced into a decision at the whims and desire of others.

Please refer to this article concerning ammoniated beef, what it means, what it can do.

The issue and concern I have regarding Pink Slime, ammoniated beef, is not whether it is right or wrong to consume ammoniated beef, but more that it is wrong for me and possibly for all those who are unaware of the practice.  Personally,  I am not comfortable with the dissemination of information, or the withholding of factual information, by the organizations and officials meant to ‘protect us.’  Yet the same organizations, such as the USDA buying 7 million pounds of pink slime for school lunch programs, or politicians swallowing pink slime to prove ‘it is safe.’

Far too often the public is swayed and convinced of the facts and led to believe in the safety and necessity in killing deadly bacteria – effective but safe?

Friend or Acquaintance?

April 20, 2012 in Friendship, Responsibility

My friends list on one popular social networking site is almost 4000 and on another is several 100, and I have to laugh because the majority of them I could not even consider to be acquaintance, little alone a friend.  It seems it has become fashionable to count the number of people you can claim as ‘friend.’    Even as sit writing this article, I have to laugh in looking at the list of ‘relevant terms’ associated with friend and acquaintance, the search returns such phrases as healthy relationship, positive psychology, intimate relationship, female friend and horney mofo.  As I think of my ‘friends list,’  I cannot help of the terms suggested and how all my friends on those list equate to the relevant terms.  With but a couple of exceptions, now of those in any of my friends list would equate to any of the relevant terms, except maybe for female friend.  Why doesn’t the list include male friend?

Have you ever seen the movie Tombstone, about Wyatt Earp, the Earp Brothers and Doc Holiday?  Now without a doubt Wyatt and Doc were a true friend to one another.  Willing to fight for one another to the end of it meant it.  A true friend, will go the gunfight with you, not only to watch the gunfight, but to fight with you to the death if it is mean to be.  That IMHO (in my humble opinion) is a true friend!  These days, it can be difficult to even find a friend to go watch the gunfight with you

It is in someways a joke, but in others, something I am very serious about, before someone can even move towards being my friend they must know three things about me – my middle name, my birthday and my favorite color.  How many people can you answer these questions about?

Along with the knowledge of these things, I ask myself a couple of questions – such as why, why do I desire this person to be my friend?  What – what am I willing to give to this friendship, in order to have a friendship.  A friend is not easy to come by and chances are you may have more of an acquaintance in someone than a friend, but what are you willing to give for that friendship?  What is the other person willing to give for your friendship?   It is a two-way street and involves more than simply knowing their name.  Maybe if we take the time to consider what a friend is and what our friends give us and what we give them we can being to know more a healthy relationship from the friendship and more positive psychology.

A friend should add value to our life just was should add value to a the life of a friend, be it male, female, comrade or a ‘horney mofo.’  Want a true friend?  Make sure you can be a true friend.
